Slots, table games and live dealer games
Online casino lobbies boil down to three kinds of game. Slots take up most of the space in a typical lobby, every result decided by a random number generator, with the return set by the game's maths. Table games such as roulette, blackjack and baccarat come in two forms: digital versions, also run on a random number generator, and live dealer versions, where a real croupier deals real cards or spins a real wheel on a video stream and you place your bets on screen.
Evolution, one of the best known studio operators, was founded in 2006 and opened its first studio in Riga. I still play live blackjack more than anything else, partly for the pace. A live hand takes longer than a digital one, which means fewer bets per hour, and that quietly lowers how much you can expect to lose in a session.

Choose a game by its rules, not its theme
Two games that look identical can cost you very different amounts, because the house edge sits in the rules. Roulette is the easy example. A single-zero European wheel has a house edge of 2.70%, while a double-zero American wheel takes 5.26%, nearly twice as much for the same game. French tables that use the la partage rule, returning half your even-money stake when zero lands, cut that 2.70% to 1.35% on red, black, odd, even, high and low.
Blackjack hides it in the payout for a natural. A table paying 6:5 for blackjack instead of 3:2 adds roughly 1.39 percentage points to the house edge, which wipes out most of the advantage of playing perfect basic strategy. Read the felt, or the rules panel online, before you sit down.
Baccarat is simpler than it looks. In the standard eight-deck game the banker bet carries a 1.06% edge and the player bet 1.24%. The tie bet pays 8 to 1 and carries 14.36%, which is why I never touch it. For slots the equivalent is the RTP figure in the help screen, and I explain how to read it in what RTP and volatility really mean.
Playing within your limits
If you play in Great Britain, use a casino licensed by the Gambling Commission. You must be 18 or over, and the operator has to check that before you can deposit or play. Online slots also have stake limits in law: £5 per spin for adults aged 25 and over since 9 April 2025, and £2 per spin for 18 to 24 year olds since 21 May 2025. Those limits do not cover roulette, blackjack or other table games, so the discipline there is yours.
Set a deposit limit when you open an account rather than after a bad night. Decide what an evening's play is worth to you and treat it as spent. If it ever stops feeling like entertainment, GAMSTOP lets you self-exclude from every licensed British online casino in one go, and my responsible gambling page lists the other tools and where to find help.
Frequently asked questions
Which casino game has the lowest house edge?
Blackjack played with good basic strategy at a table paying 3:2 usually has the lowest edge, often well under 1%. The banker bet in baccarat at 1.06% and even-money bets on a French roulette table with la partage at 1.35% are close behind.
Are live dealer games fair?
Live dealer games use real cards, shoes and wheels filmed in a studio, so the outcome is physical rather than generated. The house edge still applies exactly as it would in a land-based casino.
Do the UK stake limits apply to roulette and blackjack?
No. The £5 and £2 per spin limits introduced in 2025 apply to online slots only. Table games such as roulette and blackjack are not covered, so set your own limits for those.
Does a 6:5 blackjack table make a big difference?
Yes. A table that pays 6:5 for blackjack instead of 3:2 adds roughly 1.39 percentage points to the house edge, which wipes out most of what perfect basic strategy gains you. Check the payout printed on the table before you sit down.
